The Tramway:

Soon there came a competing form of transport, the

advantage because wheeled vehicles ran more smoothly
on steel rails than on the roughly paved streets of
those times.  Also, horses could more easily pull
them.  From Manhattan in 1933 the tramway idea spread
to other cities.

In 1855 it crossed the Atlantic and arrived in Paris,
where Loubat started to operate his "American
railway."

In 1860 the American George Francis Train established
the first "street railway" in Great Britain at
Birkenhead.  He was so enthusiastic about the
possibilities of his invention that he inaugurated
it with a great banquet, inviting the attendance
of all the eminent people of Europe, including the
Czar and the Pope.

We can smile at his presumptuousness, but his tramway
was a good idea nonetheless because his horses could
pull cargoes in vehicles that were more comfortable
and more luxurious than the omnibuses of the time.

Opposition against the installation of rails in
streets kept Train from operating in London, but
in 1870 the British parliament passed the Tramway
Law regulating the construction in Great Britain
of tramways, which then started appearing in most
large cities there.
