I received the following from the person who wrote the "Make Wordle 
Accessible" extension. He confirms that the NY Times broke it.

"Hey, thanks for writing and glad you've been enjoying it! Yep, it's not 
just you - it looks like they totally rewrote the whole 
Wordle implementation on the New York Times site so the extension broke. 
I can definitely fix it but it will take some time, I'll let you know."

It would seem the JAWS June update was merely coincidental.
