The Image Merchant

A Wood-carver made an image of Mercury and offered it for sale in the
market place. When it had sat unsold for a long time, he cried out that
the statue could bring wealth and luck to its owner. A bystander asked,
"If he is so good and helpful, why sell him? Why not use his power
yourself?"

"Ah," said the carver, "I need immediate help. He seems inclined to give
his gifts very slowly."
