December 3 saw the beginning of the trial of Armin
Meiwes, a computer technician living in Robenburg,
Germany, who is accused of killing and eating a
man that he had met through a web site.

Meiwes, who confessed to killing and eating
Bernd-Jurgen Brandes, said to the German newspaper
"Welt am Sonntag" that he wants to discourage other
people from doing what he did.

Meiwes met Brandes after announcing on the Net that
he wanted "young men, eighteen to 30 years old,
with nice bodies who wanted to be killed".

He said that he was looking for a man who wanted
his penis to be cut off and cooked so that he could
eat it before being stabbed to death.  Incredibly,
some people answered his ad.

Some, however, did not want to go all the way.
But Brandes really wanted to go through everything.
After cutting off his penis, Meiwess cooked it and
the two of them ate it.  Afterwards, he killed Brandes
and cut his body up into small pieces, which he
placed in his freezer.  he ceremony lasted two hours
and was preserved on video.

Meiwes said that that seeing horror films when he
was between eight and twelve years old inspired
in him fantasies of eating his friends at school.
He told the court that eating human flesh for him
was like a Christian communion ceremony.

Meiwes's defense lawyer will probably defend him
by maintaing that Brandes really wanted to be killed
and eaten.  If the court accepts this defense, Meiwes
will receive a prison sentence for up to five years.
It is probable that the prosecutor will demand a
life sentence with the argument that Meiwes is too
dangerous to live freely in society.

Cannibalism is not illegal in the German penal code,
and the charge against him is murder for sexual
satisfaction.
