I had always thought that CDs and CD-Rs would last
for about a hundred years.  But I recently heard
that CD-Rs can become unreadable in less than two
years.  Is this true?

Answer:  Some of the better manufacturers claim
that their CD-Rs will last anywhere from 10 to 100
years, but recent tests seem to indicate that the
media's practical life may be shockingly shorter
than predictions.

The cheaper varieties of CD-Rs, which most people
use, tend to be the worst culprits.  Some CD-Rs
can become corrupted beyond repair in less than
two years, even when stored in the best of
environments.

It would be wise to consider avoiding the cheaper
discs and perhaps using a more reliable storage
medium altogether if you plan on archiving your
data for historical purposes.
