Is Interlingua a name already taken?

[Florin Sunel]
Sorry to intrude (and sorry for speaking English)
but I think there is a need to shed some light on the issue of
Interlingua being a name already taken. Most of the Internet searches
for "Interlingua" return links
to Interlingua AB, a company in Sweden for translations
and courses of foreign languages,

and links to an automatic translation system The latter case has to do
only with a limited region, including Japan, Indonesia and so on. The
system used in
translation, called Interlingua, is originally called Interlinguish, but
the Asian countries had to use a
different name, mostly because of copyright reasons. The
ideas in the system are very interesting, so if anyone wants to know
more, don't hesitate to mail me.

The bottom line is that Interlingua, the name of
the auxiliary language, is the only international name.
** Allan Kiviaho: "... the only international **

And, to be honest, I quite like it, and I think it's very illustrative
for the universality of the language.

Dear Florin,
Your observations are quite correct re Interlingua. I have
been told by older members that we have the copyright of the name.
** Allan Kiviaho: Probabilemente solmente in paucos **
** paises. Quasi certemente non in Finlandia, pro **
  ** examplo. **

A member and clever interlinguist, Ric Berger, Switzerland, has once
started a legal process against an intruder and had won. Ric is dead
since many years. I
think we in our movement later have been too lazy to watch
our rights and that this is the reason why you can find many
"interlinguas" on the net. To start new processes will cost money. - I
don't know more about the present situation.

I don't know which automatic translation system Interlingua AB uses and
I don't know more about the company either. It can't be easy to create
such a system. Working groups within EU have worked on it for many
years, I've been told. They have experimented with an intermediary
constructed language to translate to and from. But as far as I know
there is nothing yet put in practical use.
** Alicuno diceva in TV que un bon systemo de **

Yours,
Jan

Interlingua
an artificial language which is used in machine translation to represent
the meaning of a text in a (natural) language- independent way.
(Microkosmos glossary)

                      [ APPENDIX 1 ]
The Dayton peace agreement and Nato's presence in Bosnia have made
possible the first tentative steps towards reconstruction in the
war-torn former Yugoslavia and, while the most pressing need is for
rebuilding shattered homes and infrastructure, one language school is
laying the foundations for language travel for the people of Bosnia.
The Interlingua language school in Sarajevo, which was established
in 1989, and which remained open throughout the siege of the Bosnian
capital, is now looking to establish exchange programmes with schools
and universities abroad.
Interlingua's Directors, Edin Hadzic and Nedim Berbich, have seen
student numbers increase in recent months and they have employed
teachers from Sarajevo University to cope with demand. The school offers
courses in English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Arabic and Turkish.
They have also been offering a Bosnian course for beginners to aid
agencies, British and American troops and embassy officials.
But, the peace agreement has given many Bosnians their first chance
to travel abroad (though many men of military age are still restricted
and do not have passports), and Interlingua is keen to set up exchange
programmes with institutions abroad. The main demand is for English and
the school is looking to establish links with universities in the UK.
Nedim Berbich, who is still serving in the Bosnian army, and who
has seen many of his friends wounded or killed, has developed a special
course for the disabled victims of the four-year war. "They have
defended their country and now they have no chance to earn money and no
real future," Berbich said. "Languages are their only hope."
