*		Today in Black History - February 7		*

***********************************************************************
* "Once a year we go through the charade of February being 'Black *
* History Month.' Black History Month needs to be a 12-MONTH THING. *
* When we all learn about our history, about how much we've *
* accomplished while being handicapped with RACISM, it can only *
* inspire us to greater heights, knowing we're on the giant shoulders *
* of our ANCESTORS." Subscribe to the Munirah Chronicle and receive *

1712 - Twenty-one slaves are executed after killing nine whites when
a slave revolt occurs in New York City.

1842 - At the Battle of Debre Tabor, Ras Ali Alula, Regent of the
Emperor of Ethiopia defeats warlord Wube Haile Maryam of Semien.

1872 - The doors of Alcorn Agricultural & Mechanical College in
	Alabama open.

1883 - James Hubert "Eubie" Blake is born in Baltimore, Maryland. He
will become a pianist, who will be an instrumental part of the
creation of a new music movement named 'ragtime.' He will
form a song-writing team with Noble Sissle that will create
many Broadway musicals. He will temporarily retire after
`	World War II and will see a resurgence of his career in the
1960's, with renewed public interest in ragtime. He will
remain active as a jazz pianist and composer until his
ninety-ninth year. He will join the ancestors on February 12,
	1983 in New York City.

1926 - The first Negro History Week begins. Originated by Dr. Carter G.
Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and
History, the Sunday kickoff celebration involves ministers,
teachers, professionals, and business people in highlighting
the "achievements of the Negro." The concept will win
increasing popularity and be expanded in 1976 to an entire
month of local and national events exploring African American
	culture.

1933 - Colonial troops in Suriname kill 2 demonstrators.

1945 - President Harry S Truman appoints Irwin C. Mollison judge of the
U.S. Customs Court. He becomes the first African American
	appointed to a federal judgeship.

1946 - A filibuster in the United States Senate kills the Fair
	Employment Practices Commission bill.

1974 - Grenada achieves its independence from Great Britain (National
	Day).

1974 - The Symbionese Liberation Army claims responsibility for the
kidnapping of Patty Hearst, daughter of Randolph Hearst.

1984 - Michael Jackson is awarded a 4-ft-high platinum disc by CBS.

1986 - Haiti's President-for-Life, Jean-Claude Duvalier loses control
of his country to strikes, led by students. The U.S. government
will ask him to resign and help him flee to exile in France.
Henri Namphy becomes leader of Haiti.

1991 - The Rev. Jean-Bertrand Aristide is sworn in as Haiti's first
	democratically elected president.

2000 - Tiger Woods gains his sixth straight PGA Tour victory with an
astonishing comeback to win the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am,
becoming the first player since Ben Hogan in 1948 to win six
	in a row.

2013 - Mississippi officially ratifies the 13th Amendment, abolishing
slavery, some 148 years after the rest of the country got around to
it. The state legislature ratified the amendment in 1995, but the
state never officially notified the U.S. Archivist, making that
ratification unofficial. When two Mississippi residents discovered
that the ratification was still unofficial, they contacted the
office of the Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann. He quickly agreed
to file the required documentation to the National Archives and make
the ratification official. On this date, Director of the Federal
Register Charles A. Barth writes when he receives the notification,
"With this action, the State of Mississippi has ratified the
Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States."

2019 - Frank Robinson, a first-ballot Hall of Fame player who became the first
African American manager in baseball, joins the ancestors today at the
age of 83, according to Major League Baseball. He was royalty, a legend
in the world of baseball. He was a 14-time All-Star and had a legendary
career. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1956 when he hit a rookie-record
38 homers for the Cincinnati Reds, won the Triple Crown in 1966 with the
Baltimore Orioles, and remains the only player to win an MVP award in each
league -- with the Reds in 1961 and the Orioles in 1966. He also led his
teams to two World Series titles, winning with the Orioles manager in 1966,
when he also was voted the World Series MVP, and 1970. After retiring, he
would become the first African American manager in major league baseball.
