FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- 6 FEB 98 The Board of Directors of the Interlingua Institute has at the end of January unanimously elected Henry Fischbach as President. One of the three Incorporators of the Interlingua Institute in 1970, along with Dr. Alexander Gode and Alice Morris Sturges, he served as its first President for 18 years and now assumes that position once again. Henry Fischbach was born in Vienna, attended French Lycee in Belgium, and earned his degree in comparative linguistics and premed studies from Columbia University. He has been involved with scientific and technical translation for over 50 years, including several years with the U.S. Government in its overseas news and feature operations. He has been awarded Honorary Membership by the American Translators Association (ATA) for his initiative in co-founding that Association and he was elected Vice President of the Frederation Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT), serving also as Co-Chair of its Technical and Scientific Translators Committee. A member of the American Medical Writers Association and of the American Chemical Society, he has written many articles for professional journals and has been a frequent panelist on scientific and, especially, medical translation. In the early days of the United Nations, he contributed to the UNESCO compendium on sci-tech translations and later to the official discussions preparatory to adoption of the "Nairobi Recommendation" to promote translator rights and qualifications. He was awarded the Alexander Gode Medal (ATA) for service to the profession and the Goldene Ehrennadel (BDU) for "exceptional merit." Accredited by the ATA for translation from French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, Mr. Fischbach is owner and Director of The Language Service, Inc., a scientific and technical translation service, since 1950, and is currently preparing a comprehensive French-English medical dictionary in collaboration with William Gladstone, author of the English-French Dictionary of Medical and Paramedical Sciences.
