Banjul-US Direct Flight to Start Next Month

Daily Observer (Banjul)

September 27, 2000

SB Danso
Banjul

Following the US Federal Aviation Authority's approval for direct flights from Banjul to New York, Ghana Airways has announced its plans to start plying the route early next month.

Humphrey Daiko-Saikwa, general manager, USA/Canada operations, said at a press conference in New York that the route would have been operational before now but for the cost of aviation fuel at Banjul International Airport as compared to other countries.

He noted that "Banjul has a good airport and a good runway and we are discussing the matter with the authorities in Banjul". He said their first direct flight from Banjul to the USA is scheduled for October 25.

Mr. Daiko-Saikwa further explained that apart from the Banjul-USA route, Ghana Airways will soon start flying to Dubai and Beirut, explaining that their constraints are not peculiar.

He said incidences of cancellations and flight delay have reduced drastically and that they have hired more cabin crew members who are currently undergoing training.

Gayrelle Henderson-Bailey, senior general manager USA/Canada said Ghana Airways will employ more flight attendants for its new destinations. She revealed that they have two sales representatives in Canada who are working very hard.

Also present at the event were Henry Vaneck and Edward Taylor, accounting executives, as well as Mawuko K Afadzinu, the airline's advertising/marketing manager.
