ACCRA, Dec 12 (AFP) - Ghana's main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)
has
won 99 of the 200 seats in parliament, the Electoral Commission (EC) in
Accra
announced on Tuesday when it officially released final election results.
The commission said that the currently ruling National Democratic
Congress
(NDC) of outgoing President Jerry Rawlings got 92 seats, while the People's
National Convention (PNC) won three and the Convention People's Party (CPP)
took one seat.
Independent candidates won four seats in the general election, which was
held on December 7 in parallel with a presidential poll mainly pitting
Vice-President John Atta Mills against the NPP's John Kufuor, who failed to
win enough votes to avoid a run-off round.
The remaining parliamentary seat will be contested in a by-election to be
held at the Asutifi South Constituency in Brong Ahafo Region on January 3.
The
vote there was postponed by the EC because of the death of the NPP candidate
a
few days before polling.
