Mr. Manneh,
I think we more or less agree on the plight of Palestinians and the need to
affirm with them on their quest for decency and justice. I think it will
also be fair to say that we both understand why people sign up to become
suicide bombers. But does understanding equate with condoning what is at
best a barbaric act, as suicide bombing certainly is? Does understanding why
most junkies invariably turn to burglary mean we have to accept burglary as
a legitimate act? This is the crucial point i've been making.
Suicide bombing, even if we understand why people resort to it, is a
barbaric, reprehensible and inexcusable act. I hope we'll condemn it in the
same breath and terms as we condemn the IDF's repressive, illegal and brutal
assaults on the Palestinians.
