UPDF troops have been deployed in Bundibugyo district, following reports that the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) have regrouped in the adjacent villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The ADF splinter group under Commander Kasakya have regrouped in Kamango and Bunduguya, their former bases in Ituri region before they were routed by the UPDF about two years ago, security sources said.
UPDF Second Division Commander Col. Poteli Kivuna yesterday confirmed the latest development but said the military was monitoring the situation.
"The wanainchi in those places were not happy, they came and reported to us that the enemy was back. We are monitoring the situation as well as taking precaution on our side of the border," Kivuna said.
When asked whether the presence of ADF rebels in Ituri would force the UPDF to cross the borderline into the DRC, he replied, "If they invite us we shall deal with them," he said. On Wednesday night, UPDF troops were seen in transit through Fort Portal town in the neighbouring Kabarole district towards Bundibugyo. The troops were initially in Bundibugyo but were recently taken for training, security sources said.
Commander Kasakya was part of the ADF command but disagreed with its overall Commander, Jamil Mukulu who is on the run.
Bunduguya was the scene of clashes between the ADF remnants and UPDF troops last October in a battle in which the rebels lost 45 fighters.
A few months later, Uganda withdrew all her troops from the DRC after neutralising the ADF and facing some international pressure.
