GAMBIA 2005: GHANA, HOSTS CLASH IN FINAL
18-05-2005 ,Cafonline.com
Two-time winners Ghana will tackle host Gambia in the final of the 6th African
Junior Championship Sunday after both countries won their respective semi-
finals.
The Black Starlets of Ghana needed two late goals to see off a determined
Ivorian team in the first semi-final of the night.
In the other semi-final, Gambia came from behind to beat Amajimbos of South
Africa 2-1 inside a packed Independence Stadium in Bakau.
This will be the second clash between Ghana and Gambia after the Ghanaians won
their first clash by the odd goal in a Group A match.
Both Ghana and fellow West African neigbours Cote d’Ivoire were tied at 0-0
after full time as well as after the first half of extra time. However, with
five left in the second half of extra time, 16-year-old Audu Abukari cashed in
on a defensive mix-up between the Ivorian goalkeeper and his defender to score
the opening goal.
The Young Ghanaians doubled their advantage two minutes later when striker
Opoku Agyeman ran up to a loose ball before the lobbed the ball beyond a
stranded goalkeeper Andy. It was Agyeman’s fourth goal of the tournament.
South Africa surmounted the robust style of the Young Scorpions to go in front
through Amos Sibeko after only 18 minutes. Sibeko’s first-time shot from the
top of the box gave the Gambia goalkeeper no chance.
Three minutes after the interval the host nation drew level through Sainey
before the long-legged Mamadou Ceesay bravely chipped the ball beyond an
onrushing South African goalkeeper for Gambia’s second goal three minutes later
and send the entire stadium into raptures.
South Africa will now play their Group B rivals Cote d’Ivoire in the third
place game with the winner picking the final ticket to the FIFA World Under-17
Championship in Peru in September.
