Ex-Mint manager accused of fraud
Published: September 13 2005 03:00 | Last updated: September 13 2005 03:00

A former manager at the Royal Mint has gone on trial, accused of secretly
sharing in commission payments on a big west African contract and defrauding
his employers.

Prosecutors told jurors at Southwark Crown Court that Hector Williamson, 65,
had been close to retirement when the allegedly illicit deal was struck and
was a highly-regarded regional sales manager with responsibility for west
African contracts at the Mint.

Douglas Day, QC, prosecuting, said the former employee had a spotless career
spanning 26 years, and was largely allowed to work without supervision.

But, the barrister continued, his clients had included Mr Junkung Bayo, who
at the time was general manager of the Central Bank of The Gambia. In 1996,
a substantial "re-coinage" contract for the west African country was agreed
with the Mint.

Prosecutors are now alleging that commission payments were demanded, and
that part of these - a sum running into five figures - was then paid to Mr
Williamson. Mr Day detailed to jurors how brown envelopes had been collected
and delivered from offices in south London.

Mr Williamson denies one count of conspiracy to defraud between February 12
1996 and February 17 2001. The trial continues.
