Malanding,

I think the choice here is a simple one; if Gambia-talk can host the list it will be an ideal solution to the problem as far as I am concerned. Both criteria will have been met I suppose...

What I know about Yahoo! Groups is that as long as the list exists the archives will be available. As of lifting them in their entirety, I do not know.

My fear with Gambia-talk is the question of individual email distribution. As far as I understand, subscribers have to log into the site in order to access mail. I had requested clarification on the issue from Bamba Laye but none was forthcoming at the time.

Individual email distribution is most ideal especially with regards to keeping interest for the list alive. Going by myself, I was an active contributor when The Gambia-talk mailing list offered email distribution but I can count the number of times I logged into the site after the migration and quickly lost interest either because I simply forgot to do so, or kept putting it off. So for the sake of the list I hope Gambia-talk can offer email distribution, in which Gambia-L may have finally found a permanent home.

Regards,

Kabir.

PS: For the record, my offer was not to 'lead' a Yahoo! Group but to 'create' one.

Folks,
We knew all along that it was in the works but it now final! St Johns
University our host has set date to discontinue Maelstrom. Come Feb 1
2006 we must find a new place for the Bantanta. Already a couple of
people have offered to host it. Amadou Kabir Njie offered to lead a
Yahoo group by the same name and Abdoulie Jallow (BambaLaye) has offered
Gambia-talk services to host Gambia-l . In any case we must seek to
maintain a few core values. 1. access and control over the archives and
2. open and free spirited debate environment. A number of people
supported BambaLaye offer based on believe that we as a community would
have more control over the archives than with the Yahoo group situation.
Whether this is real or not I am not computent to say.

Perhaps it is about time to set a timetable for migrating to our new
host and make sure things are working before the Feb deadline.

We thank St Johns for all the service and wish Gambia-l a new and better
home.

This posting is on the ADMIN topic, please be careful with replies.

----------------------

Disconnect of Maelstrom service:

The University is no longer in a position to support the Maelstrom
List Service. As of February 1, 2006, St. John's will discontinue
the service.

List owners should make arrangements to migrate to another service
prior to the disconnect date.
