Press Release in Commemoration of the April 10 and 11,
2000 Student Massacre in The Gambia:

April 10 and 11, 2000 marks one of the darkest days in
The Gambia. A peaceful demonstration participated by
thousands of unarmed, innocent students to express
their grievances in the murder of a fellow student and
rape of an other, were confronted by security forces
who shot and killed 14 students and a Red cross
volunteer in broad daylight. Several other students
sustained serious injuries and some of them have been
maimed for life. This massacre was followed by another
wave of brutal crakdowns in the provencial cities,
followed by arrests of numerous pro-democracy
activists and some journalists who were out to cover
the massacre.

Six years have passed since then. The future of The
Gambia and its people continous to be bleak without
any sign of change and in utter defiance of the
supreme law of the country and no sign of respect for
The Gambian people. President Yahya Jammeh
dictatorship has gone 50/50 to that of former
president of Liberia Charles Taylor. This is so
because the international community are paying lips
services to his terror and brutality on the Gambian
people.

We, the New York, United States based Movement for
Democracy and Development in The Gambia want to
express our disgust against the cold-blooded murder of
these school children and Red Cross Volunteer. We
condemn the blanket impunity that President Yahya
Jammeh accorded to these criminals in military
uniforms. It is a mockery of justice and an insult to
Gambians that such a heinous crime will go unpunished.

We urge Gambians, and families of those victims to
never forget this day, and come October, 2006
elections teach President Yahya Jammeh a lesson by
voting him out of office and face the Crime against
Humanity Tribunal.

Today in remembering the atrocities of April 10 and
11, 2000, we take this opportunity to pray for the
victims and pledge our solidarity with the families
of the victims, who are daily crying for justice.

Signed:

Saihou Mballow
Chairperson
