Coach Duodu quits Gambia`s U-17 squad
Banjul, Gambia, 02/15 - Osam Duodu, head coach of Gambia`s Under-17 national squad, "The Baby Scorpions", has resigned his post, FA officials confirmed here Tuesday, without giving reasons for the departure of the Ghanaian-born technician.
The Gambia Football Association (GFA) officials said Duodu terminated his agreement "without clearly advancing reasons for his move".
"I do not want to go into details of my resignation. I am going back home to aid my country with the forthcoming 2006 World Cup in Germany and the 2008 African Cup of Nations that my country, Ghana, will host," Duodu was quoted as saying.
"I do not hold any grudge against anybody. I am proud that The Gambia secured a better position in the ranking of the U-17 World Cup than Australia, Italy, Uruguay, Ghana and Qatar, just to mention a few."
He added: "I wish the new GFA management well with special thanks and gratitude to President (Yahya) Jammeh who did a lot for the Baby Scorpions and for the development of Gambian football".
Duodu has been somewhat of a hero for many soccer fans in the Gambia, especially after the "Baby Scorpions" lifted the trophy as champions of the Sixth U-17 African Cup of Nations played in Banjul last year.
He took up his assignment on 1 June 2004 as the U-17 team`s coach after an agreement with the Gambian FA.
His resignation, according to some football analysts, will have a serious impact on Gambian football and would mean a lot for the burgeoning team.
