Hi!
Bira go, the post was meant to be as lighthearted as can be and was rightly interpreted as such by Kabir as others. You however have brought in some interesting perspectives. Thanks for the interesting comments. Is there any other use for the expressive word "mbaay"?

Amat, it sure is not the Gayes I'm referring to but I cannot name the surname because someone might just starve me. I didn't know that Wollof cannot be a tribe either given that my mother is a Wollof with the Jobe surname. I would also like to register my desire to learn Sererr and Bambara because I love their music and I am real fan of Oumou Sangare of Mali.

Kabir, I have to "agree" with everything you say about those people with the four letter surnames just to keep the peace but put some benachin in front of them and see them go at it.

Alieu, I think you are mistaken. Are you sure Birago Diop didn't write another surname? There has to be a serious discussion as to whether Birago is going to maintain his Jobe surname.

Malanding, this sure beats me but I would also like to know.

Thanks Jabou, Tejan and others. Have a good evening.

  Mr Gassama,

First of all, I don't know if your statement is a joke or a provocation. I can comment on certain aspects of it anyway.

  1. In my world, Wolof is a culture including a language which are owned by humanity as a whole, so I don't know who the Wolofs are besides those who make use of the cultural rites and language with all it's richness, like any other cultural inheritance developed by humanity.

  2. You seem to have mixed up two different words: Mbay (the surname) and Mbaay (an expressive word).

  3. the other problem is that adjective is taken as a verb in the case of Tooyaan (verb) which should be Tóóyé mbaay (adjective), Nasahaan should be Ma-Nasaxaan mbaay, likewise Nyawaan should be Ma-Ñaawaan mbaay etc...

  4. In the tradition of Kal or Senewyaa, it is the Njóóbéén (Jóób) and the Njaayeen (Njaay) who teese each other in those terms.

If your intention was to evoke a cultural exchange, I think it is an intresting area.

  Take care.

    Hi!
Is there anyone who like me has wondered what the Mbyes did to the Wollofs? The Wollof language seems to have linked a lot of negative attachments to their last name. Examples are:

    "Chem Mbye"

    "Teetan Mbye"

    "Nasahaan Mbye"

    "Nyaawaan Mbye"

    "Toyaan Mbye"

The list goes on. Who is responsible for this? Without venturing to cause an all out war, can it possibly be those with the four letter last name who seem to attach everything good and positive to their last name? You know those people? Those who eat so much but try to blame the Jobes for being "teet". Me na call no name. Have a good day.
