It appears that President Wade has backed down completely backed down and asked the National Assembly to scrap the proposed constitutional changes. Vive Senegal!

Bailo, I share your sentiments entirely on the more democratically-mature Senegalese. Haruna.

Malamin,

The Senegalese masses have responded resoundingly to attempts by their octogenerian President to rig the constitution in his own favour. The reaction of opposition parties and other civil society groups cannot be clearer; they have told grand pere Wade in very clear and stern terms that they won't have it. Regretably, their message only sunk in after a lot of mayhem including assaults, arsons and street confrontations between the Senegalese security forces, ruling-party militants and youths determined to defeat the Government's dishonorable attempts to amend entrenched clauses of the Senegalese constitution without resorting to a referendum, as required by Law.

The Senegalese people have once again shown to the rest of the world that they are ever alert and ready to defend their sovereignity. I am proud of them!

Bailo

Action and reaction, this is what matters to potential African dictators. They push the population to a corner and guage their reaction. If all the stake holders stay mute or just release tame staements, the dictator rides roughshod through everybody. Senegal was on fire yesterday, and at the last minute, wade and his minions realise that they have a potential middle eastern style revolution on their hand. Sensibly, they retracted on the 25% requirement to win elections. Gradually, they are realising that they risk taking the country to the brink. It is up to the population, and in particular the opinion leaders, to take a firm and clear stand on issues that matter. This only way to encourage democracy in the country.
