Deposed Ivorian leader meets Nigerian president
LAGOS, Dec 27 (AFP) - The ousted president of Cote d'Ivoire, Henri Konan
Bedie, arrived Monday in Nigeria's capital Abuja and went immediately into
private talks with President Olusegun Obasanjo, airport sources said.
Bedie, who went to Lome on Sunday after he was ousted by mutinous troops on
December 24 and took shelter for two days on a French military base, was
accompanied to Nigeria by Togo's defence minister, General Assani Tidjani.
He was received on arrival at Abuja's international airport by Obasanjo,
Foreign Minister Sule Lamido, other ministers and top government
functionaries, the sources said.
The discussions were under way at the presidential lounge of the airport,
the sources added, but they gave no details.
Bedie was expected to leave Abuja late Monday after the talks, the sources
added.
Before leaving for Nigeria, Bedie was accompanied to the Togolese capital's
airport by President Gnassingbe Eyadema.
Bedie, who was overthrown on Christmas Eve by mutineers who put former
defence chief of staff General Robert Guei in power, was evacuated from Cote
d'Ivoire on Sunday by the French.
A 10-member junta called the National Committee of Public Salvation on
Monday opened talks with politicians to discuss a political transition.
