Folks,
Do anybody know of a Gambian agency (government or otherwise) that set rules
and standards for naming populated places in the Gambia? I am interested in
the names of all Gambian settlements (towns and villages). I have a map of
the Gambia and list of populated places from the 1993 Census. Unfortunately
a large number of names on the map do not match those on the list. Some
common problems are:
the way names are spelt e.g. words like Ker and kerr are used
interchangeably.
the way ethnic names are used is not consistent. e.g Sare Mama on the Map is
kerr Mama on the list, or Galoya on the list is Sare Galo.
the phonetics. Place names are not spelt the way they are called. e.g Lameng
is spelt Lamin.

I am interested in names and addresses of individuals and agencies to talk
to about these and many more.

Malanding
