The Big Interview:DA Jawo reacts to an alleged plot to kill him!!! Jawo not
scared at all!!

Jawo not scared
at all!!

Revelations that his life was on the firing line, following claims made by
Jammeh's own operatives that Major Kalipha Bajinka, Lang Tombong Tamba,
Alhagie Martin alias Lagos, Kawsu Camara alias Bombardeh and Ousman Sonko
were detailed to take Demba Ali Jawo's life, whilst at a conference hosted
at the President's Sindolla Hotel in Kanilai, the Freedom Newspaper reaches
DA Jawo for reaction on these scary and heart breaking revelations. Jawo
known to be a fearless journalist, has not been moved by the said purported
plot to assassinate him. "Of course, I was quite surprised by the claims
that there were instructions to eliminate me while I was on a mission to
Sindola Hotel in Kanilai. However, there is no way I can authenticate the
claims as I never at any moment while I was there believe that anyone had
any cause to kill me. I am certainly not scared by the claims as I am still
not convinced that no one had any motive to kill me."said Demba Jawo in an
interview with the Freedom Newspaper. Below is the full text of the
interview please read on…
..................................
Freedom Newspaper: Are you worried or scared by these revelations?

Demba Jawo: Of course, I was quite surprised by the claims that there were
instructions to eliminate me while I was on a mission to Sindola Hotel in
Kanilai. However, there is no way I can authenticate the claims as I never
at any moment while I was there believe that anyone had any cause to kill
me.
I am certainly not scared by the claims as I am still not convinced that no
one had any motive to kill me.

Freedom Newspaper: Have you spotted Bajinka at the Sindolla hotel during the
period in question?

Demba Jawo: Yes, I definitely quite vividly remember when at night while we
were having dinner at the restaurant, Bajinka came there, and when he came
near where I was sitting, we exchanged some greetings. However, that still
does not indicate that there was an order to kill me.

Freedom Newspaper: Are you worried about your safety in view of these
revelations?

Demba Jawo: As I said earlier, I still do not have the cause to be worried
about my safety in the light of the claims because I still feel that I have
not done anything to warrant anyone ordering my killing.

Freedom Newspaper: Do you believe in the writers claims that the government
planned to kill you?

Demba Jawo: While I have no idea who is making such claims and what prompted
him/her to make them, but I still insist that no one has any cause to kill
me.
Of course I would agree that our colleague; Deyda Hydara was killed shortly
after that and we still have no idea who killed him and why, and the
government is doing virtually nothing to investigate the case.

Freedom Newspaper: Who do you think might have been leaking the said
information?

Demba Jawo: Again, I have no idea who is making these claims and what
his/her motivations are in making them now, after more than three years when
the incident was supposed to have taken place.

Freedom Newspaper: Any advise to those using violence to silence
journalists?

Demba Jawo: Of course, my advice to anyone thinking of using violence
against journalists is that no amount of violence and intimidation against
journalists would stop us from doing our work. We have a role to play in the
society, just like anyone else, and no one has the moral right to try and
stop us from doing our work.

Freedom Newspaper: Considering President Jammeh's hostility towards the
private press, don't you think it was suicidal for critics like you to spend
a night at Kanilai?

Demba Jawo: I consider Kanilai to be like any other part of The Gambia, and
as such, I never had any inhibitions of going there. Indeed, if anyone had
wanted to kill me, he/she does not have to wait until I go to Kanilai. In
fact, Deyda was killed right in Kanifing where I live.

Freedom Newspaper: During your presence at Kanilia, do you felt threatened
that something bad might happen to you?

Demba Jawo: No. while I was in Kanilai, I had never felt that I was in any
danger. I just felt like being anywhere else in The Gambia.

Freedom Newspaper: Do you see Kanilai as a no go area for journalists? Will
you be visiting there in the future if you have the cause?

Demba Jawo: I do not see Kanilai as a no go area for journalists or anyone
else and there is nothing stopping me from going there again whenever I have
the cause and the chance. As I said, it is a part of The Gambia and
therefore I see it is like any other part of the country.

Freedom Newspaper: What can you tell us about Kanilai? Is the place
developed as widely believed?

Demba Jawo:Unfortunately, I did not have enough time while I was therefore
to see much of Kanilai. However, there was evidence there were several
infrastructural developments, which of course include President Jammeh's
palace and the Sindola Hotel. In fact, the very fact that there was 24 hours
electricity, unlike any other part of The Gambia, tells quite a lot about
the level of development.
