Don’t Despair, Halifa
Tuesday 9th January 2007

Will the people of Serrekunda Central reject Halifa Sallah at the 25 January legislative polls? It’s hard to imagine. Halifa Sallah told Malick Jones at the weekend on GRTS Weekend Upbeat that “If the people of Serrekunda Central decide not to elect me again, I will go into more academic work to work on my Ph.D.”
Good talk, Halifa. Wise people hate to be taken unawares; that’s why they’re always prepared for the unexpected. In thinking ahead of the election, you’ve shown that whatever happens, you’ve already got a safety net – the academia. There’s no doubt that you’ve got what it takes to excel in the academia. Your sharp intellect coupled with your clear and precise writing skills, which are indicative of a brisk and vigorous mind, would stand you in good stead in the world of knowledge.
Despite that, we still don’t wish for you to bite the dust in the forthcoming legislative election. The people of Serrekunda Central still have a lot to gain from your representation of their interests in the National Assembly. They still need you there to fight for them; they still need you there to help them know their statutory rights; they still need you there to guide their political education. They know that with you there at the National Assembly, nobody will trifle with their interests. We think they’re looking to you as their saviour. If not, you’d have had a hard time to regain your seat during the by-election.
But it isn’t wise to be over optimistic; perhaps that’s why you’ve put a parallel plan in place. In the unlikely scenario that you lose the election, don’t hesitate to go back to school. It’ll afford you the opportunity to reevaluate our politics from the point of view of an impartial observer, see what’s wrong and then think up appropriate remedial steps. So when you return to the political fray, you’ll be a much better politician, strong in both theory and pragmatism of politics.
Politics is a rough world. There’re as many intellectuals who’ve failed in politics as those who’ve succeeded. Those of them who succeed learn early on in their career to temper theory with reality. If you always have your head in the cloud, you are likely to fall flat on your back in the rough and rugged world of politics. Halifa, think and learn!
We hate to contemplate the next National Assembly without your intellectual prowess; we hate to think that you won’t make it to the legislature. Men of your moral and intellectual stature are needed to give the quality of laws enacted at the legislature substance and credibility. We know you’re a deep thinker who won’t allow all sorts of frivolous laws to go unchallenged.
As it is now, just work hard on your campaign and believe that the people of Serrekunda will return you to the legislature yet again as their worthy representative. That’s our wish and we hope is the wish also of the people of Serrekunda Central.
