U.K. Mining Engineer Flees Gambia Detention, Telegraph Says

By Renee Lawrence

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Charlie
Northfield<http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Charlie+Northfield&site=wnews&client=wnews&proxystylesheet=wnews&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=p&getfields=wnnis&sort=date:D:S:d1>,
a British mining engineer, swam a crocodile-infested river and drove through
the west African bush to escape from Gambia after being accused of illegally
mining uranium, the Daily Telegraph reported, citing an interview with him.

Northfield, who works for Carnegie Minerals Plc, was detained by local
authorities in February and accused of illegally mining uranium commercially
using the company's license for excavating mineral sands, the newspaper
reported.

After 10 days in prison he was released without his passport on bail of
250,000 pounds ($443,000) and held under house arrest, the newspaper said.

He escaped with the aid of a U.K. private security company, who smuggled him
in vehicles and on foot through bush and jungle to reach the Senegalese
capital of Dakar, the Telegraph added.
