Hello Laye!
First let me clarify one point here....Tombong was never an ambassador PROFESSIONALLY.He served as chargé d'affaires ai both in Washington and London respectivley. An ambassador is usually appointed by a president/Head of state,he or she goes through a background check within (in some cases without) the host country prior to being given an agrement(meaning being officially allowed to exercise his or her duties within the territory of the host country). He or she afterwards presents letters of credentials to the receiving country's president.Chargé d'affaires ai is a temporary position occupied by a chosen diplomat to wait for the actual appointment of an ambassador or may even succeed the former one.Tombong came after HE Ousman Sallah a seasoned diplomat.Tombong handled the embassy as a chargé but not an ambassador. The etimological back ground of the word chargé comes from French.French language was used as an elite language during the past history of Europe therefore most of the
diplomatic words lean on the language.Chargé d'affaires ai- could as well be "chargé des affaires de l'ambbassade or administrateur interimaire" meaning someone handling the affairs of an embassy as an interim admnistrator.
That was Tombong.Tombong was handpicked as a political appointee, while some of us where "raw" diplomatic junior protocol welfare buddies at the then ministry of external affairs under Omar Sey(before Yaya came to power) some rose through the ranks(faster in my case).
If Tombong does not know the latter Yaya knows exactly what am saying here. There is no doubt that I was promoted under Yaya to be ambassador, however there is also no doubt that I joined the diplomatic scene during Jawara's days as a junior protocol welfare officer under Ebou Ndure. Those people professionally know me far more than Tombong and Yaya as far this dip field is concerned because they trained me.
I was not trained during Yaya's time I was trained in 93/4 before these new so-called diplomats came on the spot light.
On zooming(laugh) well Laye all I can say is that I like the word ZOOMING DEH!
Anyway I wanted to clarify the professional tags here before we go further.Am not belittling my old friend Tombong but just wanted to explain that part to those of us who did not know what all these terms and responsibilties mean or meant.
Anyone who wants to see if I or Tombong presented credentials to Bush or others may as well visit the google search.
Ambassadors are therefore chosen by both sides, the receiving country and the sending country(where the decision emanates to either send or recall).
The worst insult for diplomats professionally is when one is DECLARED PERSONA NON GRATA! Was Tombong affected by that term(thanks to the Vienna convention)? Yes!
Was I? Well the records are there for all to see.
Wasalaam!

This is quite an interesting exchange. Two former Gambian ambassadors to
the U.S at each other's neck.

Somehow, I sense that by the time this debate is over with between Tombong &
Essa more beans will spill ,unless Tombong chooses not to prolong.

It seems Essa has a lot to say and this time around, I suggest we should
all listen to these two former insiders who held the washington office for
Jammeh.

Whose zooming who??? ----- I 've already started hearing insinuations on
Baba Jobe. Whose zooming who???
