Hello,
I have recently joined The Gambia List. My name is Jane and my
husband, Yusupha, is from Allunhari near Basse. Since joining the list, I
have been interested and instructed (and saddened, too) reading the
exchange on politics and the economy in The Gambia. I am learning a lot
about my adopted second country -- to supplement the utter enchantment I
felt when I visited last year for 3 weeks.

My question has to do with a building project we have planned.
Being enchanted, we bought a small piece of property in Sukuta, Kombo
District. Our plan/dream is to build something like a Bed-and-Breakfast
Compound. I'd like to use traditional architectural methods as well as
ecologically friendly technologies (straw bale construction?). If anyone
has any experience with planning/building, I'd love to hear from you. I
wonder about issues like zoning, building requirements and permits,
acquiring architectural plans, finding contractors -- and doubtless any
number of other issues that, as a novice both culturally and in building
matters, I haven't even considered.

You can respond off list, if you wish, at <[log in to unmask]>.

Thank you and best wishes to you. May there be peace in the new year.

Jane Warner Dukuray
