(04/09/05) THE BRONX - Several West African Bronx residents met at the
Gambian Society Saturday to mark the fifth anniversary of the student massacre by
the Gambian military.
One Bronx resident says he still vividly remembers the day five years ago
when 15 people were killed. The Bronx group meets regularly to discuss Gambian
human rights issues and how they help people who still live in Gambia. The group
believes the Gambian government persecutes those who speak out against their
policies. A spokesperson for the group say their goal is to educate other
Bronx residents, because they believe something similar could happen anywhere.
The Bronx group holds rallies and protests to raise awareness about Gambia.
They also help local Gambian immigrants with paperwork throughout the process.
