Gambian foreign minister resigns

State television in Gambia says the foreign minister, Sedate Jobe, has
resigned.

No reason was given but observers say he may have been forced to resign
because of the embarrassment caused by the expulsion of a British diplomat a
few days ago.

The deputy head of the British commission Bharat Joshi left the country
after Gambian government officials accused him of attending a meeting of
opposition parties.

But Britain says the diplomat did nothing wrong and had simply attended a
press conference.

An opposition leader Ousainou Darboe also criticised the government over the
affair and led the calls for the foreign minister's resignation.
