Kombo East NAM under attack
By Pa Malick Faye & Lamin Kujabi
May 11, 2004, 13:49

Saihou Janko
Saihou Janko, the former APRC youth mobiliser for Kombo East, has accused the constituency’s House representative, Kebba M Touray, of orchestrating his arrest and the sacking of the four Kombo East alkalolu.

Mr Janko, a native of Kafuta, who walked into the Daily Observer office Wednesday, was arrested and detained at the Brikama Police Station along with 18 others following the defeat of the APRC-sponsored candidate by an independent in the Kafuta ward by-election in April.

Mr Janko accused Mr Touray of stirring schism within APRC in Kombo East. He alleged that Mr Touray and his cohorts, among them Chief Nfansu Jung Conteh, “were the very people behind the APRC’s defeat in the by-election as they were involved in intimidating the electorate to the point that many did not take part in the election. Everyone knew that the APRC’s candidate, Alagie Kujabi, is never the choice of the people of the area but they went ahead to select him because he is his [Kebba’s] employee. Kebba Touray told rallies during the campaign that most of the people of Kafuta are foreigners and they will not risk giving them public officers in the district. That is far from the truth as we are bonafide citizens of this country.”

Mr Janko claimed that, “Kebba Touray knows that the public is not on his side and the writing is on the wall for him in the next National Assembly election. We are not against President Jammeh and the APRC but against Kebba Touray and unless the APRC stops him, he is going to derail the party’s effort in bringing political unity in Kombo East.”
But when contacted for comment, Mr Touray dismissed Mr Janko’s allegations and said they were all, “cooked up.

The majority of the people of Kafuta are anti-APRC and records are there to show as the President did not even have 20 votes in the past elections and the Saikou Janko in question is not even a Gambian. He is from Kaabu.”
He also said he was not behind the selection of the APRC candidate as claimed by Mr Janko whom he described as “a political fanatic”.
