Yeah, I actually kinda liked that article, until I read the bit about
"The British gave you", etc., as if Gambians/Africans had nothing until
the British came along. I personally found the piece to be a bit
condescending and paternalistic. Just another presumably white person,
or at least an admittedly British one, trying to tell the "natives"
(and I meant that sarcastically for anyone who misunderstands) what to
do, once again.

And thus, I really didn't like the piece, and I think that the only
reason why it was even published was because it was anti-Jammeh. So I
guess, colonial paternalism is OK for some if it's also anti-Jammeh,
and I mean that sarcastically also. Anyway, I just found the piece to
be condescending, and even if it had some good suggestions, it could
have been worded differently, and it seemed like it was talking at the
Gambian people rather than talking to.

However, I also don't want to myself be paternalistic and get overly
upset over an article that seems offensive if the people said article
is directed to don't themselves find it offensive.

I've been doing a lot of unrelated thinking regarding if some of my own
utterances, though unintended, could have come across as paternalistic,
prejudice, or dare I say racist in nature, so I guess I've been extra
sensitive to this sort of thing.

Ginny
