JOHANNESBURG, Oct 1 (AFP) - South African investigators have arrested 22
Nigerian citizens in Johannesburg who ran an online scam claiming to
represent local banks listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange, a report
said Tuesday.
The elite Scorpions unit arrested the racketeers who operated seven
websites including fake South African Reserve Bank and Development Bank of
South Africa sites.
Investors were duped into opening online accounts with these banks, the
Business Day newspaper said.
To register victims were asked to pay 10,000 dollars and an additional
40,000 dollars in tax and insurance.
Some 28 people, mainly from outside South Africa were in online
negotiations to invest money. One victim was duped ino investing two
million rands (190,000 dollars), the report said.
The Scorpions have since shut down the fake reserve bank and development
bank sites, www.sarb.org.za and www.devbanksa.org sites.
According to the report, five other sites were still operational:
Continental Bank (www.continentalbankofafrica.com); Full Trust Bank
(www.fulltrust.com); Afritrust Bank (www.afritrustbank.com); Chartered
Investment Trust Bank (www.citbonline.com) and Eagle Bank Limited
(www.eaglebanklimited.com).
The information on these websites has been lifted illegally from
legitimate banks including African Bank and Societe Generale, the paper
said.
