IEC Head of Operations resigns but…

Malleh Sallah the head of operations of The Independent Electoral Commission
tendered his resignation recently for 'personal reasons'. Mr. Sallah who
said he would not reveal those reasons is the second top official in recent
weeks to resign from the electoral body.

A few days earlier, Ms Fatma Baldeh-Njie an IEC Commissioner also resigned,
advancing health and personal reasons for her decision to quit. When
contacted to shade light on his decision to resign, Mr. Sallah told The
Independent in a telephone interview that although he was quitting, he would
continue to work with the IEC as elections in the coming months render the
electoral commission busy.

'It would have been crude to leave at this time when the IEC has got a very
busy schedule, namely the general elections and the local government
elections,' he explained. The IEC official also said his resignation 'should
not be seen in a negative light,' meaning he has no reservations for
continuing to serve the IEC.

Responding to reports that his resignation came after major differences
between him and IEC chairman Solomon Tilewa Johnson, Mr. Sallah emphasised
that at no time was he in 'bad blood' with Mr. Johnson or members of the
electoral body's staff. 'My resignation should not be understood
wrongfully,' he emphasised.

Mr. Sallah said the IEC has been 'professionally efficient' in its work and
was an important factor in his 'professional growth'. The IEC chairman
Rev.Dr.Solomon Tilewa Johnson could not be reached for a reaction because he
was reportedly out of town.

My opinion (MORI)

I think these wave of resignations in the electoral commission should be a
concern to all Gambians . Why now when our country is heading for
elections.I believe something fishy is on the cooking. They must let the
Gambians know why these resignations are happening now. Are you resigning
because somebody is trying to influence your decisions or you are trying to
do something incompatible with the wishes of Gambians and other commission
members. I believe these questions must be answered because the resignations
raise questions rather than answers.
