DC-AREA MUSLIMS PRAY FOR QUAKE VICTIMS IN TURKEY

WHAT: On Friday, August 20, Muslims in the Washington, D.C., area will
offer prayers for those who died as a result of Tuesday's massive
earthquake in Turkey. The prayer, called salat al-ghaib (sa-lat all-guy-

ib), is performed for Muslims who have died in a distant place. (Turkey
is
an overwhelmingly Muslim country.)

The prayer, along with a collection for emergency relief supplies, will
take place following the normal Friday service at All Dulles Area Muslim

Society (ADAMS) in Herndon, Va.

Turkish authorities put the death toll resulting from the quake at more
than 7,000. The quake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale and was centered
on
the northwestern industrial city of Izmit, some 90 km (55 miles) east of

Turkey's largest city, Istanbul.

WHEN: Friday, August 20
  2 p.m. (Eastern)

WHERE: All Dulles Area Muslim Society
  500 Grove Street, 2nd Floor
Herndon, Va. (Next to the Herndon Post Office.)
exit 10 from the Dulles toll road

CONTACT: ADAMS Director Imam Mohamed Magid at 703-318-0529 (ext. 22) or

  Ibrahim Hooper at 202-659-2247.

NOTE: Because this is a religious service, reporters and photographers
of
both sexes should dress modestly. That means no shorts for men or short
skirts for women. Photographers should arrive early to get into position

for the best shots. Photographers are also advised not to step directly
in
front of worshipers and to seek permission for close-up shots. Shots of
shoes removed for prayer, and rear-angle shots of prostrating worshipers

are considered cliched and inappropriate.
