The Gambia Police force is so badly run that I don't believe it can survive
as a law enforcement institution. They are beset by instutional lethargy,
incompetence and corruption to such an extent that the public has long ago lost
faith in them. How on earth can Captain Mendy storm into a Police Station ,
reposses a car that was appropriately impounded for lack of registration and
insurance, drive it out of Police premises and take along his wife who was driving
the said car in violation of the law. He did all of this in a belligerent and
prudish manner calculated to publicly humiliate a discredited institution. And
what was the reaction of the Police leadership? A rediculous vow to recover
money Mr Mendy supposedly owes in registration fees and a promise to talk to
the army chief of staff! Just a few weeks we heard from the police that they
were finally going to crackdown on unregistered vehicles after years of
condoning gov't thugs plying the streets in unregistered vehicles committing terror
and violence.
Karamba
