Movement for Democracy and Development in The Gambia
  Based in New York
  P.O. Box 500 Bronx, NY 10453
  PH:/Fax: 718-716-2439

  December 16, 2005

Your Excellency Mr. Chrispen Grey Johnson,
  Ambassador
  Gambia Permanent mission to UN
  Suite 800 2ND Avenue
  New York NY 10017

  Your Excellency,

We the members of the Movement for Democracy and Democracy (MDD) in The Gambia based in New York are here in front of The Gambian Mission to the UN to protest the “illegal and unjustifiable” arrest and detention of three executive members of the Gambian opposition party National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD). The three leaders, Hon. Halifa Sallah, Omar Jallow and Hamat Bah who were arrested on November, 15 and charged with one count each of sedition. These charges are politically motivated bend on disrupting the opposition from preparing for the forty coming presidential election. We therefore, condemn and denounce the arrest and demand the immediate and unconditional release of the arrestees.

Mr. Ambassador, it is a shame that after 11 years of Jammeh corrupt and dictatorial rule, Gambia faces huge challenges to restore respect for human rights and the rule of law. It is a well-known fact that Jammeh is only interested in his pocket rather than the well being of the Gambian people.

Mr. Ambassador, we are aware that President Jammeh hand picked Justice Paul and Justice Agim and appointed them judges to do a dirty work for him. The Gambia is saying no to mercenary judges like Justice Paul who jailed Lamin Waa Juwara unlawfully.

Finally, the Movement is demanding from The Gambia Government to:
  (1) Release immediately and unconditionally the three opposition leaders.

  (2) Appoint and independent judicial enquiry to investigate the assassination of journalist Deyda Hydara on December 16th, 2004 and bring the killers to justice.

  (3) Arrest the two presidential guards accused in the burning of the Independent newspaper.

We look forward to your cooperation in this matter.

  Sincerely,
  Sign:
  Saihou Mballow
