BREAKING NEWS:IGP SONKO EXPOSED BY AGGRIEVED POLICE OFFICERS!!!!
        BY STAFF WRITER KARAFA BADJIE
Insiders at the police Head Quarters in Banjul, have lamented about the incompetency of the Inspector General of police Ousman Sonko, whom they described as a “square peg in a round whole.“ The aggrieved officers who spoke to the Freedom Newspaper, on condition of anonymity say Sonko cannot interpret the Criminal Code and was often confused when consulted to offer opinion on pending criminal cases at the Prosecution Department. This according to our sources had affected the work of the police, as many cases were either dismissed by the courts or dropped by the top brass.

  SOS JATTA AND JAMMEH
IGP Sonko, a trained military officer, was transferred to the police following internal infighting amongst the Force’s top brass over the position of IGP. Police insiders say Sonko, was just there to receive his salary at month end, but in reality was not meeting the challenging demand of that high position.
It is reported that his deputy Abou Jeng is covering his leadership deficiencies, as Jeng writes letters and other police communications on his behalf. Sonko, they say would spent a significant amount of time to train on public speeches as speeches drafted by his deputy were hard to fathom by the former.
“ We don’t have an IGP yet. This man is the worst IGP, we ever had in history. He cannot write a simple press release. The problem is that he doesn’t know the law. He is just here to sign whatever is forwarded to him by his Deputy Jeng. He will end up signing his death warrant one day. This is not a joke. We want the President to redeploy this guy back to the military. He is working at a wrong place.” said the aggrieved officer.

THE GAMBIAN POLICE ARE VERY ANGRY THESE DAYS. THEY SAY SONKO IS NOT THE RIGHT PERSON TO MAN THAT POST.
Another police officer attached to the prosecution Department said Sonko need to be trained on police duties to be able to man that post. “Working in the army or Gendarmerie does not qualify one to work here. Policing is a field of itself. Some of us spent months at Yundum to be taught on basic police duties. Through out my service in the Force, I have never come across this type of IGP. Even the then Field Force are better than this man. Sonko cannot even prepare a charge sheet or to offer simple legal opinion on some of the cases forwarded to our office by the Serious Crime unit. It is time for the relevant authorities to transfer this man.” said the police prosecutor, who claimed to have served the force for several years.
Sonko’s transfer to the police, was viewed in many quarters here as an attempt to scare Jammeh’s opponents, chiefly the opposition. That he was going to be used to engage in domestic terror campaign against the opposition and their followers. His redeployment to the police was not welcomed by The Gambian society and members of the Force. But under Jammeh’s rule according to observers qualification doesn’t matter. What matters, they went on, was loyalty to the Head of State and not to the country and her people.
IGP Sonko, used to work at the State House in Banjul. He was very closed to the President. The Freedom Newspaper, gathered that it was Sonko who foiled the Landing Sanneh and late Almamou Manneh’s alleged coup plot. Sonko was reported to have attended the secret meetings leading to the incident and was able to record the proceedings of those meetings.
It is also alleged that the tape containing the said meetings were handed to Abdoulie Kujabi, former NIA Director General, who in turn handed it to the President Yahya Jammmeh. His redeployment to the police was also seen as way of compensation on the side of the President.
Attempts to gather comments from the IGP, proved futile. The police PRO was also not available for comments.
