January 12, 2006
Madison, WI- On Monday the 10th , a 33-year-old Watertown, Wisconsin woman was sentenced to spend five years in prison, to be followed by 20 years of extended supervision for the fatal crash that claimed the life of Gambian native, Mahamadou Samasa, 27. Last October, the woman pleaded no contest to the charge of homicide.

The accident occurred in 2004 as Mahamadou was said to be driving alone on a highway from Watertown when his vehicle was hit head on by an oncoming vehicle that crossed the centerline. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The intoxicated driver was also severely injured in the accident.

Jeanine Olson, driver of the violating vehicle was said to be three times intoxicated over the state legal limit. She also had a prior conviction for driving while intoxicated.

Speaking to this reporter, Muhammed Tunkara, Wisconsin resident and relative of the deceased said he was contacted regarding the sentencing, and he in turn informed late Samasa's family back home in the Gambia about the ruling. He said the family expressed satisfaction with the court decision and had requested for the condition that Olson undergo treatment and counseling for her abusive drinking habits. Some financial compensation was also given to the family in Gambia.

Mr. Tunkara went on to say the family stated "We lost him, since we are Muslims, there is nothing we can do to bring our dead back but to submit to Allah's will. The whole family is praying for Mahamadou. He is dearly missed by the family and his friends." He described late Samasa as a very good guy, only 27 years old, hardworking, and the breadwinner of his family.

Mahamadou was a native of Alunhari village in the Upper River Division and grew up in Serekunda. He came to the United States in 2000.
