                    KAUR DISASTER RELIEF FUND
PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release

The KAUR DISASTER RELIEF FUND, formed on Wednesday 25th August 1999 in
response to the urgent need for assistance to the flood victims of Kaur
(Kaur Janneh Kunda, Kaur Touray Kunda and Kaur Wharftown), has sent its
first shipment of the much needed basic goods and cash to the flood victims
on Saturday, 4th September 1999.

Formed by the citizens of Kaur, the main objective of the Fund was to raise
D50, 000 (fifty thousand Dalasis) by Wednesday September 1st 1999 to provide
essential items such as food, soap and used clothing.

We are very grateful to all donors and are pleased to announce that the
target was surpassed. By Wednesday September 1st, we were able to raise D43,
518 in cash and checks plus the following items were donated in kind:

1. 50 Bags of rice, by The Standard Chartered Bank
2. 30 Bags of rice, 20 packets of soap, 24 large plastic bucks, 26 plastic
basins  by Alhagie Sankung Sillah & Sons
3. 25 Bags of rice by the Arab Gambia Islamic Bank
4. 25 Bags of Sugar by Lamin B. Gaye & Sons
5. 5 Boxes of Ovaltine, 1 large bag of plastic sandals, 24 plastic buckets,
11 iron buckets, 5 large bottles full of Chopper Chops (sweets), 20 boxes of
soap, 10 boxes of biscuits and 50 praying mats by T. K. Motors Group
6. 2 Large bales of used clothes by Lamin Jobarteh of Family Planning

The displaced families were given either half or one bag of rice each
depending on how much it suffered and the rest of the items were also
distributed according to the severity of the damages suffered. Thirty
families who suffered major displacement were given a bag of rice, one dozen
bars of laundry soap, five bars of bath soap, used-clothes and other items,
plus D300 each to bring the total cash distributed to D9000.  The following
were the items distributed at Kaur on Sunday 5th September 1999:

1. 150 bags of rice
2. 30 bags of sugar
3. 40 packets/boxes of soap
4. 5 boxes of OVALTINE
5. 50 plastic mats
6. 10 boxes of candles
7. 7 large bottles of sweets (chopper chops)
8. 11 iron buckets
9. 49 plastic buckets
10. 36 plastic basins
11. 10 boxes of biscuits
12. 12 large tins of cooking butter
13. 5 bales of used clothes

The KAUR DISASTER RELIEF FUND has opened an account at the TRUST BANK, where
additional donations can be sent. Presently the amount in the bank stands at
D25, 725.

We are still appealing to all donor agencies, the private sector,
Parastatals, sympathetic individuals to assist in this fund raising drive to
help ameliorate the suffering of the flood victims.  Donations can also be
made at TIMBUKTU BOOKSTORE on Kairaba Avenue (Opposite Sabena Office), King
Fahad Travel, Hagan Street, Banjul; Diana's Fast Food at Serre Kunda near
the Bakoteh Shell (395-400) and Capital Insurance, Aglesea, Banjul.

There is an immediate need rebuild some houses and assist families in paying
school fees. Your generosity will go a long way in relieving the suffering
of hundreds of needy people. The most vulnerable groups are the children and
women.
