Newspaper's chairman and local distributor arrested at state
governor's behest
Reporters Without Borders calls for the release of the Sam Asowata,
the chairman of the board of the Abuja-based independent weekly Fresh
Facts, who was arrested in Abuja on 27 January with his daughter and
was subsequently transferred to Uyo, the capital of the southeastern
state of Akwa Ibom, at the behest of the state's governor, Godswill
Akpadio.
The press freedom organisation also calls for the release of Essien
Ewoh, Fresh Facts' distributor in Akwa Ibom, who was arrested in Uyo
on 24 January after distributing the latest issue, which announced
that the next one would have a story about a suspicious housing deal
involving the governor.
"Once again a state governor has behaved like a provincial potentate,
arresting anyone he likes," Reporters Without Borders said.
"Nigeria's journalists often have to face the ire of state governors
when their activities are publicly exposed or their decisions are
questioned. Their power must be limited and until it is, Nigeria will
not be able to be regarded as proper democracy."
When Asowata and his daughter were arrested, their mobile phones were
confiscated and they have not been able to talk to their relatives.
So far, all attempts to obtain their release have failed. Fresh Facts
publisher Segun Abrams said however that he had been told by a
divisional police officer that Asowata's daughter could be freed
soon. She was not taken to Uyo with her father and is being held at
Garki police station, in Abuja.
Ewoh was arrested after the Uyo police failed to prevent distribution
of the latest issue of the newspaper advertising a story about
Governor Akpadio in the next issue.
According to the newspaper, the governor has entered into a housing
construction deal worth 5.5 billion naira (32 million euros) with a
businessman being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission.

Un gouverneur fait arrêter le directeur d'un journal et son distributeur
Reporters sans frontières demande la libération de Sam Asowata,
président du directoire de l'hebdomadaire indépendant Fresh Facts,
arrêté le 27 janvier 2008 à Abuja en compagnie de sa fille, Isokwe.
L'organisation appelle également les autorités locales à faire
libérer Essien Ewoh, distributeur du journal dans l'Etat d'Akwa Ibom,
arrêté par la police le 24 janvier à Uyo, après la diffusion d'un
numéro annonçant la publication prochaine d'un article impliquant le
gouverneur de l'Etat, Godswill Akpadio, dans une affaire de corruption.
"Une fois encore, un gouverneur d'Etat se comporte comme un potentat
de province, incarcérant à loisir qui bon lui semble. Les
journalistes nigérians doivent régilièrement faire face à la colère
des gouverneurs locaux, lorsque leurs agissements sont exposés
publiquement ou lorsque la moindre publication, même confidentielle,
les met en cause. Leur pouvoir doit être limité. Tant qu'il ne le
sera pas, le Nigeria ne pourra pas être considéré comme une
démocratie accomplie", a déclaré Reporters sans frontières.
Sam Asowata, président du directoire de Fresh Facts, a été arrêté
avec sa fille le 27 janvier 2008, à Abuja. Il a été transféré à Uyo,
la capitale de l'Etat d'Akwa Ibom, sur ordre du gouverneur Godswill
Akpadio. Leurs téléphones portables ont été confisqués par la police,
et ils n'ont pas été autorisés à parler avec leur famille. Jusqu'à
présent, les tentatives pour obtenir leur libération ont échoué.
Cependant, l'officier de police divisionnaire contacté par le
directeur de la publication de l'hebdomadaire, Segun Abrams, a laissé
entendre que la fille de Sam Asowata, restée au commissariat de
Garki, à Abuja, pourrait être libérée rapidement.
Essien Ewoh, distributeur de l'hebdomadaire dans l'Etat d'Akwa Ibom,
avait préalablement été arrêté à Uyo, le 24 janvier 2008, sur ordre
de Godswill Akpadio. Cette arrestation était survenue après la
diffusion d'exemplaires de Fresh Facts annonçant la publication, dans
le numéro suivant, d'un article compromettant le gouverneur dans une
affaire de corruption. Selon le journal, l'élu serait impliqué dans
une transaction immobilière suspecte de 5,5 milliards de naira (32
334 euros) avec un entrepreneur poursuivi par la Commission des
crimes économiques et financiers (EFCC). Ayant échoué à empêcher la
distribution de ces exemplaires, la police avait procédé à
l'arrestation du distributeur.
