I just think it is a huge waste to see both of you trying to reassure us
that Joe Sambou is not a double agent, partly on the bases of your knowledge
of people he hung out with in the past. Both of you, while living in a
revolutionary Samsara, "slept" for years with people just to witness them
eventually turn into President Jammeh's choir boys. So membership in an old
flock provides no certainty as to the anatomy of one's future congregation.
It just makes the transition more sensational.
So we do know that Joe Sambou is a double agent? Of course we don't. Should
we care whether or not he is? My opinion is an emphatic NO, at this point in
time. At this stage of the Gambian struggle, there will be various kinds of
alignments, collaborations, tactical and strategic alliances; people
shifting towards ideological locations that best suit their motivations and
that best serve their interests. These movements, trajectories of individual
political lives, may be recognisable in debate fora like the Gambia-L, but
are better observed in the field of concrete practice; away from these
computer keyboads, as Joe Sambou himself aptly put it. But even out there,
guarantees are not available.
You can only test the sincerity of others on account of social practice as
dictated by a collectively accepted program drawn towards some specified
end. And from what I have seen so far, Joe Sambou definitely belongs in a
line of compatriots whose services the Gambian struggle urgently needs. But
so does Jabou Joh, Jassey-Conteh, El Hajj Tapha Fye and others you may think
of. Joe's integrity must be defended. But so must the integrity of those who
made the allegations, even if we must admit that their making such an
allegation was wrong. All of them are intelligent, serious, and mean well
for progressive change in Gambia.
All of us are making contributions in our different ways for a better
Gambia; but because we believe in different methods, and varying tactics,
once in a while we will discover weakneses in each another's positions and
we may point fingers and level accusations. But if those "administrative"
matters are allowed to take center stage in the struggle, we will dedicate
less energy towards the common goal - just like the different political
parties at home and the Coalition that is yet to be.
Continuing to harp on this issue invests it with a life it does not deserve.
Let us relegate it the past.
