I'd second Kabir's motion about the yahoogroups. Moving to another listserve will not only entail neogtiations with the university in question but also create another venue for someone to disrupt the service as what happened in the case with the University of Washington.

In this age of electronic media the greater the independence the better for a discussion group such as Gambia-L.

Killing Gambia-L though would be like committing infanticide. This child has been around for a while for us to let it just go.

Mo!

I don't believe any other host one may eventually acquire can be more reliable and secure than Yahoogroups.

For one thing there is unlimited storage space, for another, the list owners have much control over the list.

In addition there are the options of conducting polls, having a database, chat possibilities, just to name a few, and all for free.

The only 'disadvantage' I see with Yahoogroups is that ads are attached at the bottom of each mail. I'll chose yahoogroups any day over even the present arrangement where list members cannot even send attachments to Gambia-L, for example.

AutoCAD Academia, of which I've been a member for a while now is a yahoogroup with thousands of members and everything is run smoothly by a few moderators and there has never been any security issues raised ever.

I think the possibility should be explored among any other alternatives.

Regards,

Kabir.

Hi Malanding,
Thanks for the information. I would suggest that you get the copy of Gambia-l archives on CD/DVD from the server administrator at St. Johns so that we have a backup. The Gambia-l archives are a national asset for future research on the Gambia and related issues.

Setting up of our own G-L Listserv will be the ideal solution.

However, I think looking for another free host like St Johns or University of Washington is not a bad idea either, knowing how demanding it is to maintain such a service. Perhaps list members at the University of Washington should make enquiries if the University could once again host the L. My doubt about Yahoo is that it’s a commercial venture and they will not be able to offer the same security and space as we have been used to.

Another alternative is to join other list owners who are trying to set up this new server so that Gambia-l could be moved to the new location without loosing the current archive structure.

Keep us informed about developments.

Best regards,
Momodou Camara
