Department of Economics

MSc in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance

A New MSc Programme
This is a new MSc programme, designed to provide a specialist training in
the principles and methods of economics, banking and finance that apply to
Islamic countries and Islamic financial systems. Islamic principles and
methods are taught alongside the traditional principles and methods of
Western economics, allowing students of both systems to benefit from the
widest possible learning experience. It formalises the specialist training
in Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance that has in the past been an
optional part of our other MSc programmes.

The MSc Programme
The MSc normally entails full-time study for one-year, always beginning in
late September or early October. It comprises two semesters of taught
modules and a dissertation written during the summer, for submission by
the end of September.

Semester 1
Three Compulsory Modules:
Islamic Economics
The Financial System
Research Methods
One Optional module from:
International Banking and Financial Markets
Foundations of Financial Economics
Semester 2
Three Compulsory Modules
Islamic Banking and Finance
Banking and Financial Markets
Comparative Banking
One Optional module from:
                Asset Management and Derivatives
                Financial Econometrics
Competitive Strategy and Credit Risk Management
Dissertation
Between 10,000 and 20,000 words, the dissertation represents original
research on a topic relevant to Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance.
The quantitative skills that are required for the dissertation (and some
taught modules) are provided by the Research Methods module. Dissertation
supervision is provided by academic staff with special expertise in
Islamic Economics, Banking and Finance.
Who should be Interested?
The programme is of interest to both Islamic and non-Islamic students
seeking to increase their knowledge and understanding of the major
financial systems operating in the world today. The MSc is particularly
suitable for students and professionals from Islamic countries seeking an
excellent standard of education in the UK.

Our Islamic Links
The Department of Economics at Loughborough University has long-standing
links with the financial services sectors and central banks of many
Islamic countries and was probably the first in Western Europe to develop
courses in Islamic economics at MSc level. For several years we and our
MSc students have been generously supported by the UK Islamic Foundation
and the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah. Over the past ten years
students from more than ten Islamic countries have studied Islamic
Economics, Banking and Finance as part of their MSc training.

The Islamic Foundation
The Islamic Foundation is situated very near to Loughborough and offers a
warm welcome and spiritual support to Islamic students of all backgrounds.
