As for today and many days to come ,Americans will be
holding on their breath until the battle of Florida is
resolved. But it is not a constitutional crisis and the
Army will never interfere in any way, unlike the
African situations. What we are witnessing is people
showing their frustrations and partisan posturing and
that is the democratic system in full flower. They are
allowing the process to run its course, and will
peacefully lead to an orderly transition of power and
the inauguration of the 43rd President of the United
States.
By doing what the country is doing now, they are
allowing no premature coronation of winner. And no
declaration that the 2000 election is over until the
last absentee vote from Americans overseas and the
last hand-counted ballot from Florida is tallied.I
believed, this will prove be young any reason doubt to
the electorate that the candidate who leads from there
is the winner.I agreed with many that every vote in
Florida be examined, every possible irregularity in
Palm Beach County be probed,no attempt to take
shortcuts be made.Whether this is done or not, the
integrity of the electoral process demands a full
accounting of the Florida ballot.
Some believe otherwise.People shouldn't ignore the
sullied-possible illegal-ballot in Palm beach,where
19,000 votes in one largely Jewish and Democratic
county were invalidated because they were
double-punched.In addition,some of 3,500 ballots for
Pat Buchanan were apparently cast by confused voters
who believed they were voting for Gore. For the voice
of the people be heard, that snafu should be probed.
From this experience, many Americans have realized that
they should do away with the electoral college in this
new century and go in for the popular vote. The
political leaders are demonstrating maturity and
respect for the rule of law. From Tuesday todate, there
is no report of an incident of violence, arrest or
killing.
What one can observe in this situation is frustration
as the wait may be,and that is democracy in action.
