The Gambian team in Seattle, Seagam Scorpions, is continuing to do well in
the annual All Nations Cup. In This year’s edition, 37 teams representing
their nations are taking part. The team topped their qualifying African
Region group with maximum Points.

In the Round of 16, the team was grouped with Mexico, Japan and Ireland.

On Saturday July 22, the team took on Mexico, the team that knocked them
out of the tournament 2 years ago. Mexico scored an early goal from a
speculative shot against the run of play. However, Seagam responded
quickly with an equalizer through Ebou Joof (aka Shakur of Brikama).
Gambia went ahead, after a fine run from Ceballos (of brikama) and a well
taken goal. Mexico equalized in the last five minutes after the referee
failed to call a blatant foul on keeper Kebba Janneh as he tried to gather
a cross.

In the early evening, in sweltering heat of Seattle, Gambia took on Japan.
The Gambia’s better physical conditioning stood out as Japan was
dispatched 3-0. Abou Jawara (Raul of Brikama) tormented the Japanese
defense the whole game and capped a good performance with a fine
individual goal. Ebou Joof also scored and Ceballos (tournament's leading
marksman up to this point) was on hand to complete the Japanese misery.

On Sunday, Gambia took on a physical and tall Irish side. Needing only a
point to qualify for the quarter finals and also needing to avoid
injuries, the team played it safe and settled for a nil-nil draw, though a
well taken goal by Kebba Touray (daddy) was incorrectly ruled offside. The
game was marked by outstanding defensive stands by Saul Faye, former
national skipper, and Karamo Bojang (Ayala from Brufut) against an Irish
side determined to make it to the next round. Mexico and Gambia qualified
from Group A.

The Gambia now faces Russia on Wednesday in a quarterfinal game. The team
hopes to get one of its brightest stars, Ebou Cham (from Albredda), last
years tournament MVP, back from injury, in time for the Russia game.

Gambia is the only African side left in the tournament and are enjoying a
huge support from the other African sides; Cameroon, Ethiopia, Djibouti,
Somalia,Tanzania and Morocco.

The team is coached by Nfansu Fatty and assisted by Yusupha Jabang, both
from Brikama. Ismaila Tunkara of London Corner is the team Captain.
