The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday December 13,
officially announced that the nomination of National Assembly candidates
contesting the forthcoming elections would begin from Thursday, December 20
to Saturday December 22, 2001.

Mr Gabriel J Roberts, chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)
at a press conference told journalists that taking cue from various
independent reports received and from their own assessments of the concluded
Presidential election, they were working to ensure that these National
Assembly elections are no less free, fair and transparent.

He said the nomination of candidates on the dates earlier declared, shall be
decentralised and conducted at the IEC regional offices in the seven
administrative areas of the country.

"We have already begun discussions with the acting director general of the
Gambia Radio and Television Services to ensure fair and equitable
distribution of air time on the national TV and Radio, as well as community
radio stations where available.

"The IEC will also very soon commence a series of radio and television
sensitisation programmes to ensure a good understanding of not just the
election process but also of the need for self-restraint and good conduct
from party militants and supporters, particularly during the official period
of campaign," Mr Roberts said.

He mentioned that for the first time ever, they have included a form for
candidates to submit their campaign schedules as part of the nomination
documents. These forms according to Mr Roberts, would now form an integral
part of the nomination documents and submission would be developed into a
master plan to ensure that candidates do not run into each other during
their campaign but go through the process without inhibition or conflicts.
