Gambian families of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the United States, have been invited by the US Red Cross Society to attend the one year memorial services for the victims from September 9 - 13.

In an interview with this reporter, yesterday at his office, Andrew Jarjou, secretary general of the Gambia Red Cross Society said he had been invited in July this year to accompany the Gambian family victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks to the United States.

Mr Jarjou recalled that two Gambian families namely the Juwara and Prierra families of Banjul and Serrekunda respectively were affected, adding that two of these families' relatives were killed at the World Trade Centre (WTC) on that fateful day.

"These families have benefited from the International Family Assistance Programme of the United States Red Cross. The Gambia Red Cross Society is still working with the US Red Cross regarding assistance to family victims," he revealed.

The US Red Cross invitation, he said, was due, to the active involvement of the Gambia Red Cross Society in the international assistance programme, saying that his visit would further forge bilateral relations between the two Red Cross societies.

"The visit would also include the gathering of information on lessons learned from the September 11 terrorist attacks and the recognition of national society workers in relation to the assistance programme. There would be discussion by all participants in helping the US Red Cross to better collaborate with national societies to serve their clients better," he noted.

Mr Jarjou added that Ground Zero (the former site of the World Trade Centre) would also be visited by the Gambia Red Cross Society. The secretary general would leave Banjul on September 7 and is expected back on September 18.
