Gambian, Ukrainians Caught With Arms In Cassamance

Last week, a Gambian and two Ukrainians were apprehended with automatic guns on the river Casamance.

Sources said the Gambian, Dodou Kinteh, who claimed to be native of Baddibu Kachang, is being detained at the Oussouye military camp. A senior Senegalese army officer said "the enemies of peace involved in gun-running in the Casamance exchanged arms for cannabis.

This cannabis then finds its way to Eastern Europe or elsewhere in the world." Asked the conditions of detention of Dodou Kinteh and his counterparts, Colonel Diatta of Oussouye military base told Daily Observer, "I am not mandated to talk to the press, but I can assure you that we will never allow any friendly or another third country to aggravate the small problem in Casamance."

The head of the Gambian community in Casamance, Saibo Omar Manneh, told Daily Observer "The Gambia should keep to its traditional peace-making role. The Gambia's withdrawal might have an effect on us, the Gambians in Casamance," he said. Military sources in Tamba said Dodou Kinteh and his counterparts have been moved to St Louis to face a military tribunal.
