SENEGAL: Imams Back UNFPA Reproductive Health Efforts
Imams in Senegal's Tambacounda and Kolda regions are backing the U.N.
Population Fund (UNFPA) in its $14.5 million 2002-06 campaign in the
country,
which includes $8 million for reproductive health, Le Soleil reports.

After meeting this month to discuss maternal mortality, family planning,
genital mutilation, adolescent reproductive health and parental
responsibility,
53 imams from the two regions have promised to assist those implementing the
UNFPA program in developing strategies and capacities and in educating the
public. The imams vowed to provide the necessary support to ensure the
total
success of the program's reproductive health component.

The UNFPA and the Senegalese Health Ministry will strive to implement
recommendations that the imams' meeting yielded, according to UNFPA Senegal
representative Essan Niangoran and Senegalese Reproductive Health Service
chief
Adama Ndoye. The imams asked the government and the Association des Imams
et
Oulemas du Senegal to set up a monitoring and coordination mechanism and
called
for reproductive health training programs for the region's imams.

Niangoran said the imams' participation will allow UNFPA "to orient our
actions, particularly those that relate to information, education and
communication; to have a better understanding of the cultural environment in
which we will be working; and to be sure we have the support of these
religious
guides throughout the program's implementation" (Moussa Sadio, Le Soleil,
