Gambia Receives US$4 Million for Poverty Alleviation And the Building of
Capacity for Local Governments

World Bank (Washington, DC)
PRESS RELEASE

Washington, DC

The World Bank Board of Executive Directors today approved an International
Development Association (IDA) credit* of US$4 million to help the
Government of The Gambia improve living conditions of the urban population
and, in particular, the poor.

The Supplemental Poverty Alleviation and Capacity Building credit will
enable the project to substantially increase performance indicators for the
total number of subprojects and strengthen the sustainability and impact of
the program to build the capacity of local government authorities to
mobilize and manage resources.

The additional credit will help ensure the completion of the portfolio of
unfunded sub-projects and consolidate the gains of the Gambian Agency for
the Management of Public Works on employment generation. It will also allow
for a close supervision of the actual impact of capacity building
activities on local resource mobilization and the local governments'
budgets.

"The project will help train small-scale entrepreneurs and consultants in
the construction sector and provide institutional strengthening to local
government authorities," said Christian Diou, the World Bank Task Team
Leader for the project.

Other project activities will include the upgrading of Kayupa Road in
Serrekunda, Brikama Carpark in Banjul, the extension of water supply
network in Kombo North, the extension of water supply in Brikama and in
Gambissara, and the construction of sheds for small-scale enterprises in
Basse to help sustain the development of small-scale entrepreneurship.

It is also expected to fund improvements to the Bakoteh disposal site,
benefiting Banjul City Council, Kanifing Municipal Council and the Brikama
Area Council.

* The credit is provided on standard International Development Association
(IDA) terms, with a commitment fee of 0.35 percent, a service charge of
0.75 percent over a 40 year period of maturity which includes a 10-year
grace period.
