MPs welcome US support against LRA

LRA rebel leader Joseph Kony

Some Ugandan Members of Parliament have welcomed suggestions by some senior Bush administration officials that the US will directly get involved in the fight against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

A senior US Defence official Gen. Charles Wald announced the United States of America will also increase the capacity of the Uganda government to protect the citizens.

The US administration has been insisting that support to Uganda was only a modest assistance especially in the civil military relations and human rights sectors.

Human Rights Organisations have been accusing the Uganda government of infringing on the freedom of association in the guise of fighting rebellion. The latest report by Human Rights Watch released on Monday accused security organs of torturing and allegedly killing suspects.

MPs who include the Chairperson of the Acholi Parliamentary Group Hon. Zachary Olum and Alice Alaso however want the government to employ both firepower as well as peace talks.

Recently, Col. Eugene Michael Mensh II from the Centre for Civil Military Relations in California and Prof. Leticia Lawson from the Naval Post Graduate School were here to train the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).
